The XIII Polish Clergy Chess Championships were held in a hospitable Higher Seminary in Tarnów from 7th to 12th July 2014.

A record number of 22 priests, seminarians and deacons participated in the championships, representing the following dioceses: Tarnów, Radom, Warsaw, Sandomierz, Przemyśl, Rzeszów, Drohiczyn, Poznań, Legnica and Włocławek. They also represented the following congregations: Missionaries of St. Vincent de Paul, Pallotines, Conventual Franciscans, Marians, Filipini; Higher Seminaries: Rzeszów, Filipini, Drohiczyn and Włocławek. The chess players represented Poland and Brasil.

The Championships were held under the patronage of: Bishop Andrzej Jeż – ordinary of the Tarnów Diocese, Bishop Jan Piotrowski – auxiliary bishop of the Tarnów Diocese, Bishop Marian Florczyk - Delegate of the Polish Episcopate for Sport, Fr. Edward Pleń - the National Sports Chaplain, Fr. Paweł Skraba - the Diocesan Sports Chaplain for the Tarnów Diocese, Tomasz Delega – President of the Polish Chess Federation, Grandmasters Mr and Ms Bartosz and Monika Soćko, Granmaster Radosław Wojtaszek, Grandmasters Mr and Ms Mateusz and Marta Bartel, Grandmaster Kamil Mitoń, Grandmaster Jan-Krzysztof Duda, MP Andrzej Dera, MP Małgorzata Adamczak, Senator Grzegorz Czelej, Senator Stanisław Kogut, MP Grzegorz Matusiak.

The grand opening of the XIII Polish Clergy Championships was made by Bishop Stanisław Salaterski - auxiliary bishop of the Tarnów Diocese, who greeted the gathered priests and wished them successful Championships. As is traditional, he made the first move on the chessboard.

Traditionally two tournaments in rapid chess P-15 and blitz chess P-5 were played. Fr. Wojciech Sola of the Tarnów Diocese won the blitz chess tournament P-5 with the complement of points. Fr. Stanisław Bąk of the Przemyśl Archdiocese was second and Fr. Stanisław Dębowski of the Radom Diocese was third. The cups were funded by Bishop Jan Piotrowski – auxiliary bishop of the Tarnów Diocese. While in the rapid chess tournament P-15 the situation was similar. Also Fr. Wojciech Sola of the Tarnów Diocese won, Fr. Stanisław Bąk of the Przemyśl Archdiocese was second and Fr. Stanisław Dębowski of the Radom Diocese was third. The cups were funded by MP Andrzej Dera.

From 2015 the Polish Clergy Championships in Rapid and Blitz Chess are moved to winter. They will be held on Friday and Saturday before Ash Wednesday. Next year they will be held in the Marian Sanctuary in Kałków-Godów in the Radom Diocese on 13th and 14th February 2015.

The Fair Play Cup was funded for the third time. The sponsor of the award was Senator Stanisław Kogut. Seminarian Tomasz Moczulski from the Higher Seminary in Drohiczyn won this award, who among other things many times reminded his opponents to press the clock.

Also, the cup for the most beautiful game of the Championships was funded for the third time. As in the past, it was again funded by the “Penelopa” Publishing House represented by Mr Jerzy Moraś. This award was won by Fr. Wojciech Sola of the Tarnów Diocese, who in the fourth round beat Fr. Andrzej Kuzio of the Przemyśl Archdiocese.

For the second time there was a team classification. Classic, rapid and blitz chess results were included in the team classification. The two best results of the players were taken into account. The first place was taken by the clergy of the Tarnów Diocese, the second place by the clergy of the Przemyśl Archdiocese, the third place by Missionaries of St. Vincent de Paul, the fourth of the Drohiczyn Diocese, the fifth of the Sandomierz Diocese and the sixth of the Rzeszow Diocese. The cups were funded by “Relief” company from Tarnów.

For the first time an award for the eldest competitor, who was Fr. Prelate Franciszek Grela of the Sandomierz Diocese, was funded. This award was funded by Mr and Ms Jerzy and Aleksandra Stachurscy representing “ArtSakr” company from Koszelówka. It was a beautiful chalice for the celebration of Mass.

In general classification in classic chess Fr. Wojciech Sola of the Tarnów Diocese became Champion of Poland for 2014. The title of Vice-champion of Poland and second place was won by Professor of KUL Fr. Sławomir Pawłowski, a Pallottine from Lublin. The third place was won by a rookie Fr. Mirosław Brzoza representing Missionaries of St. Vincent de Paul. The fourth place went to Fr. Jacek Kupiec of the Tarnów Diocese, the fifth to Fr. Stanisław Bąk of the Przemyśl Archdiocese, the sixth to Fr. Andrzej Kuzio also from the Przemyśl Archdiocese, the seventh to Fr Robert Rembecki of the Warsaw Archdiocese, the eighth to Fr. Grzegorz Wiejak – a Conventual Franciscan, the ninth to deacon Mateusz Kowalski of the Rzeszów Diocese and the tenth place was taken by Fr. Krzysztof Domaraczeńko of the Drohiczyn Diocese.
The sponsor of these cups was Bishop Andrzej Jeż, ordinary of the Tarnów Diocese.

Seminarian Piotr Wolny of WSD Włocławek and Fr Marek Mikicionek of the Legnica Diocese won chess category IV. Whereas Fr. Wojciech Sola fulfilled the norm for sports category II and Fr. Sławomir Pawłowski for category III.

Mr Zygmunt Wielecki from Gdańsk was the referee.
